I am using a pot still with no thumper.I would appreciate links to any post that will give me formulas on two things; and technique info on two other items:1. If my mash bill contains 8 gallons of water and the vast majority of that makes it into the stripping run, what type of volume yield should I expect for the low wines if I stop at 20% ABV? I typically end up with about 2.5 gallons.2. Then when i do the spirit run I generally get about a gallon of final distillate…Does my (limited) experience mirrors yours?Anything I should be doing to get more yield? When you do your stripping runs, do you include the lees/yeast?

You don’t share your grain bill, whether you ferment on grain or off, if you run your strips cleared or dirty etc, but you’re in the ballpark on everything. My 10gal (7-8%) strips (fully cleared rye bourbon ferment) yield 3gal (30-35%) abv. Final yield will vary based on your grains’ PPG, mash regime, yeast and ferment control, and of course, your cuts.Keep doing what you’re doing. Your processes will improve, especially if you keep copious notes.“Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite, and furthermore, always carry a small snake.”- W.C. I use about 2 lbs grain/gallon of water in the mash and ferment on grain. Maybe a little more than 2 lbs..At the end of the day on my 16g boiler, i’ll strip five gallons down to close to 0% off the spout. Three of those strip/low-wines runs will refill my boiler for the spirit run and final yield at ~60%abv after cuts and any proofing to barrel strength is approximately 2.5-3 gallons.Angels take a bit from the barrel too so final yield after aging may be a bit less depending on time/temp/humidity/barrel-geometry/thief’ing.This is pretty consistent if my wash/mash/ferment is in the 1.070-1.080 range and ferments dry.Cheers, jonny————i prefer my mash shaken, not stirred————
