A new startup distillery in Frederick Maryland is seeking a head distiller to make world class rum and lead to production side of their operation.
We are seeking the right individual with rum production experience and distillery management experience as well

Roles and ResponsibilitiesHead of Distilling Operations
Position Overview:The Head of Distilling Operations reports directly to the owner and is responsible for overseeing allaspects of distillery production and operations. This includes managing the production process, equipmentmaintenance, regulatory compliance, and inventory control. The Head Distiller will also participate incustomer-facing activities, such as leading tastings in the tasting room. This position requires the abilityto work independently while collaborating closely with the owner to ensure the smooth and efficientrunning of daily operations.Key Responsibilities:1. Production Management:o Oversee and manage the entire production process from fermentation to final bottling.o Ensure proper fermentations and the efficient operation of distillation equipment.o Handle gauging, proofing, bottling, labeling, and packaging of products.o Maintain accurate records of distillate inventory and ensure quality control standards aremet.
2. Equipment Operation & Maintenance:o Operate and maintain all mechanical systems including boilers, chillers, air compressors,and other critical equipment.o Perform standard and emergency startup and shutdown procedures for all equipment.o Maintain cleanliness and functionality of production and warehouse equipment.o Coordinate building equipment maintenance with contractors when necessary.3. Regulatory Compliance & Reporting:o Assist in ensuring full regulatory compliance for all production processes.o Complete necessary reporting, including lab analysis and sample cataloging.o Accurately input data into distillery operations software.4. Logistics & Inventory:o Oversee the management of distillate inventory, ensuring accurate records and properquality assurance protocols.o Assist with shipping and distribution logistics.o Operate a forklift as needed to assist with product movement and storage.5. Customer Engagement:o Lead tastings in the distillery’s tasting room or private lounge, providing VIP customers witha high-quality experience.o Occasionally assist with sales efforts and public events.6. Other Duties:o Carry out additional tasks as required to support the business.o Responsibilities and duties may be subject to change based on the needs of the distillery.
Physical Requirements:• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly from floor to shoulder height.• Must be comfortable with frequent bending, stooping, and reaching overhead.• Ability to climb two flights of stairs in succession.• Ability to safely climb and work from a ladder when required.Qualifications & Skills:• Language Skills:o Ability to read and interpret technical documents, safety rules, and procedure manuals.o Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively withmanagement, co-workers, customers, and vendors.
• Mathematical Skills:o Proficiency in basic math, including calculations related to proportions, percentages, area,circumference, and volume.o Ability to apply basic algebra concepts to distillation processes.• Computer Skills:o Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.o Experience with distillery software (e.g., Whiskey Systems or X5) is preferred but notrequired.• Reasoning Ability:o Ability to process technical information and apply it practically.o Strong decision-making skills with the ability to act independently when necessary.
