I have an 18 gallon pot. I distill inside now and would like to use an electric hot plate to heat up pot for mashing. Need to have power / heat control. Anybody have recommendations on a hot plate for this large of a pot?If not. I’ll probably go with a pot with tri clamp ferrule and grain basket. Thanks

The question is not how big the pot is, but how much power do you have available? If you’re on a US wall outlet, you’re limited to about 1800W max regardless of what you put on it.Learn from the past, live in the present, change the future.

I have a 1800 watt induction hot plate that I use on 5 gallon stockpot and it works well. I see 3500 watt induction hot plates, which require 240 Volts offered online. Not sure of the quality and the price is high enough that I chose another route. I was afraid to spend $200 or $300 and have it fail after a month and not being able to return it.

I run a 16 gallon boiler with a 5k5w hot water heater element that uses a dedicated 240V 30A dryer circuit. Heat up time for a full boiler charge with that power is approximately one hour. I also run a 2.5 gallon small batch boiler on a 1k5w cadco hotplate that I modified with a power controller. Heatup time for that boiler is maybe 35-40 min. I’d really like to use two 5k5w elements for the large boiler to reduce my heatup time and strip runs. Hope that info is helpful. Cheers, jonny————i prefer my mash shaken, not stirred————

Consider an 18G pot will carry some considerable weight with it when full… not only for the hot plate/heat source but also trying to maneuver itIf you ever find yourself being chased by a pack of wild taxidermists, do not play dead.
