  • Methanol detected in charcoal filtered alcohol

    Hi,

I’m was working on a charcoal filtered spirit.I’m revisiting it after a long time. I’d been producing a 96% spirit with a methanol test coming in at 0.5 mg/L. After diluting this to 60% ABV we have then used a  3 cylinder GAC system, followed by cartridge filtration through three chambers at 25um,10um,5um. To this i’ve added 0.001% glycerin and 0.00025% of a flavoring.

Coming back to the sample a year later for restarting the project the methanol level of the sample has gone up to 1.4/L when I’ve had it tested again.

I and working partner at a loss as to what could have caused such a drastic increase in the methanol concentration.

Does anyone have experience or guidance?

    Cheers
