  • Let’s Discuss Rum and Stills for Making Rum

Posted by MarkChap on April 15, 2024 at 8:51 am

    G’day,
My main focus will be making a good rum, I like to drink rum and so want to make a nice rum
So since putting my still together, a 50mm modular CCVM, 1.0mt column, I have done a couple of molasses/sugar washes in Pot mode
I currently have a 40lt all molasses wash fermenting to run and will ferment a few more generations to build my low wines quantity before doing a spirit run.
I understand rum needs time on oak to age and mature so I won’t be drinking any of it too soon.
I am in NO rush to update my still

Having said that, I really want to be able to make the best product I can, so my question is what type of still would be best,
I probably don’t want to go over 100mm/4", balance of cost over output,
Should I be researching Pot with a thumper, Plated Still ??

All help would be greatly appreciated

Yes, I currently have an SBB wash fermenting, will likely strip this coming weekend
Bought some more molasses today to be ready to do the next wash as well

    Hi Mark,

You’ve a few options open to you for making rum as you’ve already figured out. It will all come down to budget, how much time and space you have for distilling, and personal choice.

I’m not that knowledgable on thumpers but what I would recommend is starting out with a modular pot still and a strip/spirit run strategy. The 5 Star 4"pot is the top contender here – built like a tank and will most likely outlive all of us. Get some runs under your belt with that then consider what the next step is or even if there is a next step. Plenty folks out there making superb hooch with just a pot still. Adding 4 plated sections to the pot still will get you just as good results but in a single run.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Prof. Green.
