Is the rum wash prepared for distillation?

Posted by partonken on February 22, 2008 at 2:28 pm

I started a rum 6 days ago using9 pounds blackstrap mollasses3 pounds brown sugar4 tbsp lemon juice2 tbsp yeast nutrient, starting ph was 5.2for the first 4 days the air lock went crazy, but now in its 6th day has slowed to about a weak gurgil every couple of minutes.SG- after 6 days is 1.027 starting SG was 1.09Ive read that mollasses has only 50 to 60 % fermentable sugars so wouldthis have any effect on the final SG? or should i wait until it gets close to that magical number OTHis is my first attempt at Rum. Thanks

One thing I have never been able to do is take acurate SG readings with molasses. I just taste the wash, if it tastes dry its done, if it tastes sweet it still needs time….PugiSHINE on you crazy diamond !!!

I generally wait a few days after the fermentation has finished,so that it settles. Then I rack it for another few days before running. Start/ finish S.G’s are good to know your yield, but the taste test is best indication as to wether its done or not.

I just ran off 20 gal. of rum wash that I had to let sit a couple weeks after it was done fermenting (damn job gettin in the way of my hobby again). After the fermentation process pretty much finished up (2 weeks or so) I racked it all off into 5 gal carboys and then had to let it sit another 2 weeks before I could run it…..All I can say is Man it’s Smoooooth, even right out of the still.I think I’ll try letting my mash settle this long again and see if the results are the same.Even after racking off once, there was still a lot of sediment in the bottom of the carboys after sitting for another 2 weeks. Any thoughts?I only have to do this until the trade embargo against Cuba is lifted!
