  • eBay Listing: Copper Reflux Still

Posted by TheLightRoom on July 11, 2011 at 8:11 am

    Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the copper reflux still listed on eBay by "copper_still_man" who has been selling these online for a while, apparently "last one" for about the last 8 days – with relisted items, perhaps his last batch of them. Listing

If anyone has had any experience, are they worth $200?

Cheers, Nathan.Last edited by MacStill on Sun Nov 02, 2014 4:23 pm, edited 1 time in total.

    TLR,

By many accounts the (cheap) ebay still in question is not well made and has historically been made with lead containing products.

Don’t be put off by the seemingly high price of a well made still.

Your still is a piece of kit that will last you forever and will pay for itself many times over so speak to plenty of people (especially on here) and find out which style of still will suit your needs then you can go from there.

IMHO, a condenser controlled (CC) still would be a great place to start if you want to make some nice neutral (vodka) for flavouring. The man to talk to on AHD would be SPUD1700. After seeing his in action I am modifying my reflux column to a CC still. They are simple to use, easy to set up and clean, and when made in the correct proportions will pull 95% without breaking a sweat.

    Cheers, Heffers

I think the best piece of advice I could give you is look at different designs and don’t rush into buying a still, have a good look around the www and talk to a few people who run different designs.

Thanks to you all on your replies. 😀 The look of it left a bit to be desired, and the question of lead components is one I can’t ignore.

Appreciate the sage advise from you all. Still researching on the best type of still for what I want to do, so thanks for all the feedback on that particular one!

(more questions to come 😉 )

    The light room.

I brought one of these, through no research. Epic fail. $200 buck down the sink.

My second still was a controlled relux still, brillant.

I am a newbie, and speaking to spud would be a really good start. His design is really good for someone starting off, easily to run, pulls 95 %, perfect, and spuds loves it.

All the gents on this forum have heaps of diferent designs and full off exellent ideas.

lol, I almost fell for the same thing – "oh my god, last one! I’d better get in quick!" 😆 😆

you’ll be able to build something much better yourself for not much more $$

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Keeping a barge pole’s distance from that one, as tempting as it seemed before I asked the question here 🙂

I’m still researching, and it seems that as I enjoy vodka & gin, a full reflux still is likely best to get the cleanest ethanol base…. McStill advises me I’m going to have fun with the botanical stage of gin.. (any pointers or references there would be great, I’m about two-thirds the way through "Making Gin & Vodka", Professional Guide for Amateur Distillers by John Stone, so will see if that offers any insight into the extraction of flavours from the botanicals.

Cheers to all once again, I’ll no doubt have more questions very soon.

There’s some Gin afficionado’s on Artisan Distiller, have a browse of the recipe sections on there and pick the brains of Kiwi and the likes. 😉

Yes, Vm is definately my favourite of the reflux systems, it looks after itself pretty much and operation is simple.

    Very robust system too.
