I just saw a news article that Anchor is shutting down and liquidating operations.I have to say that years ago, one of the very first beers I spent time replicating was Anchor Porter. It was a uniquely malty and rich porter that set a benchmark for me for the style. Since there there are many, many, many other examples of the style, many of them very good, but at the time it was in its own class. I liked their steam beer and Liberty ale as well, although they are again no longer standouts in a saturated market. I’ll definitely miss this one.

I heard the news yesterday and was sad to hear about losing a historic company. 40 years ago I tried my first Anchor Steam and it was one of the beers that inspired me to start home brewing. It’s not a complete surprise with the problems the city has, but I’ll stop before I’m censored.

Sad news, but if nothing else maybe a liquidation sale will follow. A local brewery closed up near me and I got 72 litre growler for free because my brother in-law knew someone thereI drink so much now,on the back of my license it’s a list of organs I need.

I have to agree Anchor Porter has been one of my clone beers for years. It has been a great session beer and in my opinion the gold standard for a porter. Yes. One of the early clone recipes was Charlie Papazian’s Silver Dollar Porter, and I remember brewing it for the first time about 30 years ago. Good but not quite on target, but there are a number of good clone recipes out there.

Sad news indeed. At one point, for me, the steam beer defined what a craft beer should be. Gonna miss the porter too.“Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite, and furthermore, always carry a small snake.”- W.C. Fields My EZ Solder Shotgun My Steam Rig and Manometer
