Alcohol Meter / Liquid Density Meter
liquias(stranger)07/20/04 10:21 AMalcometer / hydrometer can i make my own alcometer or hydrometer ?i was thinking of getting a tube (beaker) , find some Weight to have it sink to about half its size inside a 40% alc by vol. drink, and marking this spot in it. taking some other alcholic drink (other than 40% by vol) i know the alc content of , and marking the new sink level. then i could complete the markings linearly…can it be done ?Post Extras: Print Postlamusegreen(stranger)07/20/04 10:42 AMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: liquias] Hi,I guess you could! But when they are so cheap why would you. I remember making a Hydrometer in High school using a straw with a piece of putty in one end and a few small nails dropped down in the straw with the lines drawn on the straw with a marker. Did not work very well.GreenPost Extras: Print PostBlanchy(enthusiast)07/20/04 11:28 AMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: liquias] One problem is that the markings won’t be linear. You are probably looking at 3 to 4 points. Grain alcohol, water, 40% vodka, and then one more might do it. Still sounds like more trouble than it’s worth though.ChuckPost Extras: Print PostYttrium(member)07/20/04 01:13 PMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: Blanchy] I made my own hydrometer using a plastic pipet that already had some markings on it. Its accurate to within about 2.5% and covers the whole 0-100% ethanol range. It only floats up about an inch and a third (3.4cm) between 0 and 100% so I’m thinking about making one that floats up 4 inches (~10cm) between 0 and 100% so that it is a bit easier to read.Post Extras: Print Postliquias(stranger)07/20/04 03:44 PMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: Yttrium] thank you all for the fast reply .u c i live in israel and have no idea where i can buy an alcohol meter. it seems easy enough making one . i think i will .yttrium – do you have by any chance a photo of you mesuring device ?blanchy – what do you meen it wont be linear ? does the float property change logarithmicaly or something ?Post Extras: Print PostKnuklehead(member)07/20/04 06:14 PMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: liquias] The markings on a proof hydrometer are not spaced equally so you could not just measure off points between to that you have tested.I am CanadianPost Extras: Print PostKnuklehead(member)07/20/04 06:45 PMAttachmentRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: Knuklehead] Just thought I would try something, might just work. I scanned my proof hydrometer and then printed and all marking are clearly visible. You will have to save the picture and then open it on your machine to resize it to the right length. If decide to try it the paper with the markings is exactly 6 1/16″ (167 mm) long so you could just double check. What I had in mind for you was to print out the paper and cut it out, roll it up and then stick it into your beaker with some weight on the bottom. Then you can stick the whole thing in some 40% stuff and align the paper with the markings and fasten it in there some how. Might just work out for you since you have no way of buying one. One more note, the scan is not cut off. The 100% marking is slightly cut off on my hydrometer too. Good luck.If you think that might work I could also email you a .bmp file. Depending on the software you have it may make it easier to resize if you need to do so.I am CanadianPost Extras: Print PostYttrium(member)07/20/04 07:57 PMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: Knuklehead] My guess is that top of the hydrometer you’ve shown is tappered in some way to spread out the markations of the higher proof. A linear cycliner will have a fairly linear response. Here is a picture of a fischer scientific hydrometer that has a density range of 0.7 to 2.0https://www1.fishersci.com/Coupon?gid=2367973&cid=1341Here’s one from Canada scientific for measuring alcohol. Unfortunately the picture is small, but if you save the image and zoom in on it you can see the even markings fairly well.http://canadawide.ca/products/569-500.1.htmlPost Extras: Print PostKnuklehead(member)07/20/04 08:29 PMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: Yttrium] My hydrometer is much like the second link you posted. It has a bulb at the bottom by the weight then it tapers to where the markings are. The section where the markings are is not tapered at all. I checked that out and you are right, all spacings are equal. The spacings on my hydrometer are not equal at all and as the alcohol content gets higher the spacings get wider making it easier to read acuratly at high alcohol content.I am CanadianPost Extras: Print PostLeftLaneCruiser(journeyman)07/21/04 10:09 AMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: liquias] Normally itwould be easy to advise you to order a hydrometer over the internet. But since you’re living in Israel any parcel coming to you by mail via the net will make you a suspect of being member of an Al-Quaida cell i suppose…So i guess you’ll have to stick to your home-made hydrometer. Or maybe you have relatives, friends, other people you trust abroad who can bring one for you with Christmas ? ProfessorDuck(stranger)07/22/04 06:37 AMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: liquias] I considered making a hydrometer when I was gathering my resources to make my setup. My plan was to use a nice wide straw plugged with silicon with something for weight at the bottom, and then use metho and water to get alcohol mixtures at 10%, 20%, 30% etc. up to 100%, and make the markingss based on that.Since hydrometers are very easy to get and fairly cheap in Australia I decided not to be a tight-arse and just go buy one.My hydrometer rules.______________________________________Question reality…Post Extras: Print Postcartouche(journeyman)07/22/04 10:31 AMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: ProfessorDuck] Hey Liquias,The schmendrick just called you a tight arse !He may have a point there !C.p.s.I f inally got a chance to use this word I learned from a tribesman of yours.Post Extras: Print PostKnuklehead(member)07/22/04 03:39 PMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: ProfessorDuck] Good thing you bought one and didn’t make what you described. The straw and the silicone would have ended updisolved in your product if you stuck that in high % stuff.I am CanadianPost Extras: Print PostProfessorDuck(stranger)07/23/04 07:32 AMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: cartouche] >Hey Liquias,>The schmendrick just called you a tight arse !>He may have a point there !Hehe, no, that’s not what I meant. As he said, alcometers are not available where he lives so making one is perfectly understandable. It just makes you look like a tight-arse if you happen to live in Australia where the alcometers flow like water from the mountain streams (not literally you understand).______________________________________Question reality…Post Extras: Print Postliquias(stranger)07/24/04 10:51 PMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: Knuklehead] guys ,i had a kind of a hectic week . i hadn’t the time to reply to all of your answers till now .i have read everything you guys wrote .i have no idea where to find anyone that sells an alcometer in israel. i can get a hydrometer from animal stores that specialises in fish.i will certinly look into it before trying to build one .VERY special thank you to Knuklehead for all the effort of scanning his alcometer and giving me the exact measures and all. this is the greatest help i could get on the subject of building my own alcometer.thank you all.liquias.Post Extras: Print PostKnuklehead(member)07/25/04 03:12 AMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: liquias] Hey, not a problem, just tiring to help out. Any of the mail order brew supply stores anywhere on the planet will be glad to send ya one for 10$ or less plus shippin’.I really don’t understand the problem here… just order one.Water, taken in moderation, cannot hurt anybody.-Mark TwainPost Extras: Print Postrebel(journeyman)09/12/04 05:51 AMRe: alcometer / hydrometer new [re: theholymackerel] I’m with everyone else here just buy one online.make beer not warLight travels faster than sound.
