  • Agitator for 4000L Molasses Fermentation

Posted by pacific distillers on August 1, 2024 at 3:21 am

We are currently running 2000L ferments with no agitators the yeast action keeps things moving, they can be a bit slow finishing  but we average around 12-12.5% with a fairly simple protocol.

We need to increase our output and are looking at moving to 4000L ferments using the same protocols- would it be safe to assume that the yeast action at this size will still not require and agitator? Anerobic cone bottom ferments, nutrient additions at intervals and DAP on day 2.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

Do you oxygenate well before the initial pitch and work to dissolve the molasses well?If so you should be fine without additional agitation after the ferment starts. Worst case you can use your pump to recirculate your tanks and by keeping the outlet hose in the ferment you wont introduce too much oxygen.

Hey Kindred thanks for the reply, yeah we oxygenate and the molasses is thoroughly mixed we have never had an issue to date so hopefully same protocol will work

    Cheers

You can blow CO2 or Nitrogen into the bottom of the cone to temporarily agitate towards the end of fermentation without having to worry about pumps, hoses, and the sanitization/clean up necessary – just make sure your tank is vented and give it a blast.  A small co2 tank would last nearly forever.

Or if you have a welder – argon or nitrogen work just as well.
